About Lewis Evergreen
|
Our fertile farmland lies within a region known as the Mississippi Alluvial Plain. This narrow strip of land lies 150 to 200 miles from the Missouri State Line down to Helena, Arkansas, near Memphis, TN. It is believed that a river resulted from two massive shifts in the channel of the Mississippi River which originally ran west of what is now Crowley’s Ridge and created a broad valley. It then broke through the hills at Chalk Bluff and followed what is now the present channel of the St. Francis River and flowed East of the ridge on to what is now Helena, Arkansas. Crowley’s Ridge is the result of the original strip between the two old channels of the Mississippi River. Fertile and rich soils produced lush flora which included a variety of magnificent native hardwoods similar to vegetation now found in the Appalachian Mountains. Examples are Oak, Hickory, Yellow Poplar and the American Beech. Ferns and flowers abound here, some of which are the American Bell Flower, Crimson Catchfly, Butterfly Weed, Cardinal Flower, Blue Lobelia, Phlox, Verbena, Wild Hydrangea, Hibiscus, Aster and Yellow Jasmine. Equisetum fluviatile, a fossil plant that flourished during the middle Miocene age of the Tertiary Division, still adorns the sandy loam creek banks on parts of our farm.
